Hello, I have a Samsung A54, Android 14. I am trying to copy the record of an accident to my computer and find no way to do it. The file is played correctly by DailyRoads itself.

The storage is set as default to “/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.dailyroads.v.pro/files/dailyroadspro”. In the Android file manager this folder is not shown at all. Under Android/data there is nothing, probably because of permissions. I can not access the log file either.

  • There is no option to copy the file elsewhere on the device. (Why?)
  • Trying Nextcloud it reports This file can not be uploaded, Unknown error.
  • Trying to upload to Google Drive does nothing.
  • Trying to upload to Dailyroads reports network error.
  • Trying to upload to my home server reports network error. What is an accepted protocol? I tried sftp which works from other computers.
  • Trying Gmail it says that the file can not be attached.
  • Trying bluetooth it reports Unsuccessful send, Unknown file.
  • Trying kdeconnect it reports 0 files sent.
  • Trying Dropbox reports Failed to share file. We ran into a problem uploading ‘unknown’.

Likely most of these are because other apps do not see the file. How to let them?

Sorry about the problems. Google has increasingly restricted access to the default storage, which infuriated many people. You can see discussions and possible solutions here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/173lsrc/android_14_storage_access_framework_no_longer/
https://xdaforums.com/t/access-android-data-and-android-obb-on-android-14-with-shizuku.4644152/
https://help.locusmap.eu/topic/35449-android-data-folder-access-on-newer-android-versions

The long-term solution is to change the storage folder (from within the app’s settings) to point to a publicly accessible folder, so other apps can use the files from there. But, changing the storage location would clear the already recorded videos, so you wouldn’t want to do this yet, until you can copy the video with the accident.

Thanks for the answer.

I collected the possibilities from your links and none of them works.

I found an explanation in one of them:

“Google has completely locked down access to /data/**, even if you could access it in latest android versions the app data inside of them is unmounted from the namespace completely, so only the currently running app and a couple of other whitelisted apps would be present inside of it. Even root users have to start a root shell with a special namespace flag to access the contents of /data/* since everything is unmounted.”

Dailyroads (and nothing else) can read the files. So what is the plan?

To me what may look feasible:

  • A “Copy to” or “Copy to Downloads” function.
  • When changing the storage folder, moving the files. (This is dangerous if I try this and it is not yet implemented.)
  • There may be a way to invoke the sharing functionality using a temporary file that the other process sees.

Anything it is, it can only be done within the app. Is it reasonable to request a solution? Thank you.

Hello, one of my attempts have produced a “Files” app that is distinct from the factory file browser. This could access the files so I could save them.

My particular problem seems to be solved, for now. Once I save the files, I change the storage folder. The default should be something that is accessible (on the day of installation, until Google gets to it).

Thanks for your patience.

Glad to see you found a solution for your device. Given the limitations introduced for that folder, it’s no surprise a few 3rd party apps found ways to bypass them. But, it can be a challenge to find and try such apps.

Will have to investigate how we can detect a proper storage folder which doesn’t keep the files captive. It can be tricky to implement a proper solution for all the Android versions which come with their individual limitations.
